After your physician certifies that you have become medically stable and can expect no further improvement in your condition, you may be eligible to receive a permanent partial disability settlement or a total permanent disability settlement. Unlike some other states, the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries' workers' compensation program does not include a temporary total disability category.

Permanent Partial Disability (PPD)

Permanent partial disability awards are one-time payments. Award amounts for specified disabilities, such as the loss of hearing, sight, or an arm or leg, are set by state law. Payment for unspecified disabilities (those not included on the specified list) are determined in part by the disability rating assigned to your condition by your doctor.

Total Permanent Disability (TPD)

  • If your injury or illness results in a total permanent disability, you may be eligible to receive a pension, paid monthly for the rest of your life. However, if you choose to return to work, pension would no longer be applicable.

If you believe you qualify for a pension or PPD settlement, but your claim has been denied, an experienced workers' compensation lawyer can file an appeal with the board of industrial insurance appeals, and represent your interests at the settlement conference to help you receive the maximum amount of benefits for which you are eligible.
